All kinds of cats, from A to Z

This page will be somewhat a window into the world of cats. There are over 50 recognized breeds of cats. I will attempt to list many of them, but I may not get all of them. Here you find types of cats with pictures, and information on the different breeds of cats.

Although many thousands of people own and love pure bred cats, most people who have a cat, own one from a shelter, a friend, or a stray.
The International Cat Association recognizes 55 breeds as being eligible for championship competition (57 pictured on their site), 2 non-championship breeds, 2 advanced new breeds, and 10 preliminary new breeds. I am sure any cat lover will enjoy the images on this page.

Abyssinian cats

Abyssinian cats. Not only are they first alphabetically when it comes to cat breeds, they are first in the hearts of many cat lovers.
When I look at an Abyssinian, their facial expression, seems to say "You just think you are the one in charge....you have to sleep sometime".
Their sleek appearance, and large ears, give them a unique appearance, suggesting physical agility. And in fact, they are generally playful. They are available in several colors.

Cornish Rex Cats


The Cornish Rex, although similar in appearance to the Devon Rex breed, is cause by a completely different mutation.
Most cats have 3 types of hair. Of the three types of hair, the Cornish Rex has only fine down hair. It's hair is also curly. Their fur is very soft to the touch. They have a sleek appearance. When I look at one, the thing that strikes me is that their heads seem small, and because of this, their ears seem huge.
The breed originated in Cornwall England.

Yes, I think so. If the owner is a responsible owner, and the cat is not from a Kitty Mill, then I think it is OK. It is also GREAT to get a pet from a shelter.

Yes, it is. Of course, it is best to buy them from a great, professional, loving vattery, but I take that is usually the case. I have visited some catteries, where the owners were not "just" cat fans but they kept dogs and other animals too, yet they loved their cats as much as all of their other pets.

I have never owned a purebred cat, I have always gotten on from the shelter or from a person who is getting rid of their cat (they deserve to be loved too)... but there is nothing wrong with it, because they are looking for love as well, and if you don't mind spending that kind of money on a cat, well then I guess that is your choice.

It is fine, but there are also purebred cats in shelters. Try there first. Hopefully you'll fall in love with one even if it's not purebred.

BTW, it's not unheard of to find some purebred cats in shelters or humane societies.

My cats have mostly been mixed breed and rescues, very rarely have I been lucky enough to have my own kitties from the same cat :)

I would never buy a purebred cat! We have 4 cats and all of them are rescues (one of them was an abandoned kitten we found in front of my husband's office). There are too many homeless pets just because some pet parents aren't responsible enough to spay and neuter their pets...

I think giving a pet a loving home is more important than breeding a pet for a loving home (or for show). I don't have anything against show animals per se, but with so many being euthanized daily, it would behoove all of us to take adoption (of children, also) more seriously.

I veer more towards re-homing the ones with out a home. However I have no problem with pure breads. I would like better to give a cat a home who was let down and loving it back to full health or making it better again. :) How ever poor things should not have been let get this way.

Same with dogs - there are just so many being destroyed or bred through heartless kitty and puppy mills that until the crisis is over and all the mills gone -no. Well, maybe a few people who take their breeds to shows or whatever - and personally know the breeder - but most people, absolutely not.

There are plenty of purebred cats at the shelters, rescues, and humane society. I personally own all rescues two Persians, Himalayan, Snowshoe and a Scottish Fold.

Himalayan Cats are basically a blue eyed color point version of a Persian. This was made possible when Persians were crossed with Simamese, decades ago.

The short bobtail of the Japanese Bobtail Cat, is the result of a mutation. Like most other mutations, it is caused by a recessive gene. The Japanese Bobtail had been around for hundreds of years.

Manx Cats are best known for having no tail, but some of them do have a very short stub of a tail. They originated on the Isle of Man. The tailless trait in Manx Cats, is caused by a genetic mutation. Many genetic mutations are caused by a recessive gene, but the Manx tailless trait is caused by a dominant gene.
